  RA DIVISION
RA Division was introduced to BUSHNELL while undergoing her recent yard overhaul in Charleston, South Carolina. With the addition of the new facilities of the Division, the ship is now able to service not only conventional submarines but also the most modern nuclear submarines in the Fleet.
    RA DIVISION FUNCTIONS
The primary function of RA DIVISION is to keep radiation under control and "cleanse" spaces and equipment subject to radiation. This mission of the Division serves also in the area of personnel decontamination and protection. This work is accomplished by dressing the personnel in anti-contamination clothing which fully protects the body skin from loose or air-borne radioactive particles. There are two types of suits, one for "wet" contamination and one for "dry" contamination. However, should a person come into contact with radioactive particles a personnel decontamination room is available for removing this loose contamination.
All RA Division personnel and other personnel who perform work on radioactive materials are required to wear a Beta-Gamma film badge. This film is processed monthly, or more frequently if it is suspected that the wearer has received a higher amount of radiation than normal. This processing is carried out by RA Division personnel. In addition to the film badges personnel are required to wear a pocket dosimeter which requires no processing and furnishes a running check on radiation received. Additional protection is furnished by the taking of "swipes" and air particle samples. This gives RA Division information pertaining to contamination both on surfaces and in the air. These surveys are made daily in the nuclear area, adjacent spaces and other various parts of the ship. RA Division furnishes adequate radioactive protection for both the crew of the BUSHNELL and the submarines along side.
    RA DIVISION PERSONNEL
RA Division is comprised of a total of sixteen men. These sixteen men consist of the following: LCDR J.D. McILRAITH, MSC, USN, is the division officer, LANGVEL, F.L., BTC, is the leading chief and assistant division officer, and two Chief Hospital Corpsman, TRUVER, R.J. and BOWER, J. All three chiefs have attended the Navy nuclear power school and are qualified in such matters. There are four third class petty officers who are the section leaders, they are: SASSI, M.A., EN3, SPAKE, B.E. MM3, LANE, J.E., EN3, and CLARKE, B.V., EN3. The remainder of the men are E-3's and E-2's, they are JAILLET, F.D., FN, KHUN, R.J., SA, MARCUM, T.J., SA, NAPPI, J.S., SN, STUMBO, R.A., FN, and WAGNER, M.G., SN.
   RA DIVISION SHOPS
Clean Weld Room - This room enables welders to work in a semi-grade-A clean work shop for stainless steel and precision weld work for the nuclear power submarines.
Clean Room - This room is used to establish a grade-A clean condition for delicate parts and instruments to be processed.
Pipe Cleaning Room - This room is used as a preliminary step in the process of grade-A cleaning materials for the nuclear submarines.
Nucleonics Room - This room is used as a focal point for radiological functions. It also contains equipment and facilities for analysis of environmental surveys and radiochemistry. Anti-contamination clothing, dosimetric devices, and radiological control equipment and supplies are stored and issued from this room and it also functions as a records stowage room and office for the Radiological Control Division.
Dark Room - This room is used for developing and reading film badges and determining the amount of radiation a person receives while working on a nuclear submarine or in radiation areas aboard BUSHNELL.
Personnel Decontamination Room - This room is used as a change room for personnel working on nuclear submarines and also used for the radioactive decontamination of personnel.
Contaminated Laundry - This space is used to launder anticontamination clothing and clean protective devices.
Equipment Decontamination Room - This room is used for the radioactive decontamination of components, tools and materials.
Radioactive Waste Processing - This space contains the system for receiving, processing, and stowage of radioactive liquid wastes and resins.
The Storerooms are:
Radiological control storage cage - This space used for bulk storage.
Health physics locker - These storeromms contain equipment and supplies for RA Division functions.
As you can very well see BUSHNELL is always ready to answer any order with a cheerful "aye-aye" and turn any job into a job "well-done".
