USS BUSHNELL (AS-15)
  MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
  PAGE-10

At 0800 each day the Boatswain pipes the familiar call - "Sick Call." Thus begins another day for the BUSHNELL's Medical Department. From sore toes and lacerations to complicated diagnostic problems will be seen by the department. Each case will be screened by the sick call Corpsmen. From sick call, the more serious cases will be referred to the Medical Officer. To assist the Medical Officer, a complete laboratory, pharmacy and x-ray are manned, all by trained technicians. Contrary to popular belief our pharmacy contains a few more drugs than the traditional APC's. As a matter of fact from six to eight hundred prescriptions a month are dispensed.
BUSHNELL's Sick Bay also maintains a fully equipped ward and operating room. Twenty five to thirty men from the BUSHNELL and SUBRON TWELVE are our guests each month, and we can proudly say we haven,t lost a patient yet. Both major and minor surgery is performed in our operating room on a reqular schedule.
Getting released from active duty or shipping over? Welcome to Sick Bay, as here is where your physical examination is taken; one to two hundred physicals are given each month. A few more tests are made to determine if you are more than warm and breathing.
LT R.G. FARMER, MC, USN is our capable BUSHNELL Medical Officer and Head of our Medical Department. He shares his demanding duties in the ship with the Submarine Squadron TWELVE Medical Officer, LT A.W. DEWEY, Jr., MC, who is responsible for the health and welfare of the Squadron personnel. "Doc" DEWEY is the Medical Officer present when helium and special air pressure diving is performed. He examines men particularily interested in diving and submarine school qualifications; which makes him a welcome member of our dedicated Medical team.
The BUSHNELL's Medical Department is currently staffed by eighteen Corpsmen and one Medical Officer. Of the eighteen Corpsmen, fourteen are rated and six are various technicians. Regular conferences and lectures are held to keep our men up to date on the latest medical developments.
So remember, the next time you hear sick call piped, your Medical Department is here to serve you, no matter what time, day or night
